Adventures in Couture

'I am assisted by the photographs or drawings published in the papers which often present me with an entirely new light on my creations,' said Christian Dior, though I'm not quite sure what he'd have made of this blog post. But here goes....

Always up for a new experience, this week, That's Not My Age tries couture on for size. Currently on seaside location, chez old college friend, S, an avid hoarder of vintage porcelain, collector of general bric-a-brac, stunning host and fabulous tour guide. It's like the Antiques Roadshow with alcohol. So far we've eaten our way around the county, visited Old Harry Rocks and tasted some Dorset Knob (a local bread-based delicacy). I've also tried out all the beauty products in the bathroom, but that's between you and me.

So, last night after a glass of Rioja, S casually uncovered an old 1955 Christian Dior evening dress. Dior in Dorset. Who knew? One of my favourite fashion exhibitons ever, was The Golden Age of Couture at the V&A. Splendid. It obviously had a greater affect on my companion than I realised - she's gone couture crazy. And, even though this floor-length gown is priceless, delicate and custom-made for someone else, I had to try it on:

Easier said than done. The big full skirt with layers of net petticoats and intricate hook & eye detail slipped on quite easily but the bodice with its tiny waist and narrow sleeves was a different proposition.

Fortunately, S didn't mind playing Upstairs, Downstairs, and eventually, with the assistance of a loyal maid, That's Not My Age was adorned in couture. Blimey, it can't have been easy in the olden days - I could barely move and this without a corset! I'd forgotten how nostalgic some of Dior's designs were. Totally turn of the twentieth century. People, this is NOT casual glamour.

Dior also said, ' Couture is the marriage of design and material. There are many instances of perfect harmony - and there are a few of disaster.'

What do you think of my New Look? Perfect harmony or disaster?

PIANO MAN...

(everything thrifted from head to toe except rings and purse)
vintage B&W stripe Christian Dior blazer, vintage Elton John tee, vintage cobalt blue leather shorts, black straw boater hat, vintage patent leather clock purse, double buckle Modern Vintage booties, vintage sunnies, vintage bangles, vintage crosses necklace, Forever 21 LOVE double rings and Buffalo Exchange cross, snake and black opal rings
I need an assistant, STAT! I'm not gonna lie it's kinda hard doing all my pics myself but I always love the outcome. It takes me awhile to trust people. Cause when you have alot of clothes like me, girls are always trying to steal from you. That's why I rarely take people to my studio. It's like a vintage heaven. Racks for days, piles of clothes waiting to be hung, stuff still in bags, the purses and OMG shoes! So only if your lucky. I'm going to do a shoot of my studio soon, just have to get it organized. So you can see what I'm talking about.
Anywho, who's obsessed with leather shorts??? I am, I am! I'm not going to be able to wear these for long cause it's fucking hot in Houston. But when I saw these I had to instantly put them on. The color is a really awesome shade and they're buttery soft to the touch too! They were a little long so I just cuffed them under! Yay!
I have a shitload of stuff to do but I'll see you tomorrow for some fun Mother's Day pics!
I love you all!
Peace, love and vintage,
Virgin

Style Tips: How to wear animal print

Which fashion statement echoes right on you?

Don’t wear animal print if you don’t wanna look like an old mama desperately seeking a papa.

If you are to make a serious fashion statement, wear animal print. Don’t be afraid. Wear it with confidence. It’s all about attitude anyway.

I would not be surprised if this question divides the house of fashion. Many believe that young women should not consider wearing animal print because they are likely to end up as fashion disasters. The other side of the house, however, claims that no matter what print you’d wear, if you’re not confident and skilled enough, you are certainly going to end up a fashion disaster. It's all a matter of how you carry the print.

Animal print in itself is a fashion statement. However, unless you are making an editorial shoot, certain things should be carefully considered in wearing these prints to avoid hitting the front page of "what were they thinking?". Believe me, it's very easy to make mistakes.

Don’t match if it’s large

Matching colors and prints is very common in styling. However, not only does going too matchy projects a trying hard obsolete way of styling, it is as well considered a big NAY when it comes to animal prints. Choose only one large part of your outfit as wild. For instance, if your top is a leopard/tiger/zebra print, let the tights/skirt/pants be non-animal. If it's your dress that has the print, then let your shoes be plain black. A touch of the same print on your footwear would only work as long as the black or white? is dominant.

Tone it down

If your outfit is too wild, tone it down a bit. If you wear an animal print mini dress, you can tone it down by wearing a single-colored-cardigan over the dress which color blends well with your wild print. If you wear a leopard print tights, for example, you can tone it down by wearing a knee length boots with color that blends but suppresses the strongest shade of your animal print. You can decide too for the color of your boots by taking a non-dominant shade from your other accesories. Take a look at Whitney Port’s outfit. If she just toned it down with this Willow casual leather knee boots, she could have saved her fashionista image and avoided some OMG writers from asking, "Is it just us or is it these skinny leopard-print pants?"

Another way of toning down a large wild is by carrying/wearing accessories that steals attention such as fur purse or fancy scarf. But then, their color should always be complementary.

Go matchy if it's accessory

If you feel the urge to go matchy, you can do so on your accessories provided that they don’t clash. For example, if you wear leopard printed boots, you can take a tiny purse in leopard print. If your tiger bag is with considerable size, you can take a pair of tiger print stilettos. But hopefully, your long scarf is no longer a leopard/tiger and your head gear does not scream jungle. The key here is getting minimal.

Stay single

I don't mean that you girls should stop searching for the man of your life [yes, he is being searched for not unless you already found him] and just stay single. What I do mean is that you would never go wrong if you take only a single item of animal print, either for your top, bag, shoes or scarf, while the rest of your outfit is entirely a shade of black or white. I'm not certain though, if this would also work if everything in your outfit is brown - if that won't make you look like a walking dead trunk? Do advise me.

Try D&G style

If you want to be effectively daring, you can try Dolce and Gabbana style. A fitting sleeveless with low cleavage top paired with black and white polka dots, tucked in with black booties is a fabulous look to steal. A pair of fitting long sleeves top and below the knee pencil cut is otherwise an alternative.

Notice that the top and skirt are matched [bottom photo] but the prints are of big patterns with light brown as the main shade. Complete the look with a pair of plain black stilettos.

FLORAL GANGBANG...

(everything thrifted from head to toe)
vintage floral slouch dress, drugstore thigh hi stockings, vintage b&w spectator oxfords, vintage straw hat, vintage patent leather clock purse, vintage bangles and Christian Dior round sunnies
It must be spring cause everywhere I go there's fucking HUGE pink and white flower growing on almost any and everything! So you know what comes with flowers! FUCKING BEES! Like huge bumblebees! The last shot is me running from the bastards! I wasn't shooting for Alice in Wonderland but these kinda turn out GRUNGE WONDERLANDSQUE! The dress and purse both were gifts. One thing I love more than vintage discounted clothes is GIFTS! I didn't suffer any bug bites or stings, thank satan! As Samuel Jackson would say, "IT'S SPRING MUTHAFUCKAS!" Grab the bug spray!
Now you know I've got to say HEEEEEY to all the new followers and thank you soooooo much for all your kind words. Old and new! It feels good to know you're LOVED!
xoxo Virgin
