Live a healthy lifestyle

Your lifestyle has a profound effect on all the different aspects of your life, even your hair. You can live healthily by eating nutritious food, exercising regularly, hydrating yourself, and getting enough rest. By following a healthy lifestyle your hair will get the nourishment that it needs, allowing it to remain healthy as it grows longer.

Trim your hair regularly

A trim means cutting about ½ to ¼ of an inch from your hair. Trimming your hair will remove dry and damaged hair and prevent split ends. Inform your stylist that you are planning to grow your hair longer and instruct him or her only to trim your hair. The frequency of trims will depend on how you care for your hair, what routines you follow, and the products you use on it. The better your hair care routine is, the healthier your hair will be and the fewer trims you will need.

Protect your hair

You might want to wear your hair loose at times, but make sure that you protect it from harsh elements in the environment. Don’t expose your hair to too much sun as it can become dry and damaged. Protecting your hair also applies to when you sleep at night because your hair can rub against the pillowcase and bed sheets, therby becoming drier and tangled. Wear a silk night cap when you sleep or switch to soft fabrics for your beddings like silk or satin.

Avoid too much heat styling

Flat irons and curling irons are some of the most commonly used hair styling devices. Unfortunately, using these items regularly can damage your hair. As much as possible, avoid styling devices that rely on heat and choose a hairstyle that will not make use of heat styling.

Choose the right hair accessories

Even the accessories you wear in your hair can affect its health and condition. Be sure to choose hair accessories that are not rough and will complement the texture of your hair. The wrong accessories can cause hair to fall out and can damage your hair.

Condition regularly

Hair has natural moisture and oils that can be stripped off by shampoos, chemical treatments, and other elements in the environment. Conditioning helps moisturize and nourish hair, thus making it healthier and preventing hair breakage. Be sure to apply conditioner right after you shampoo your hair. Deep conditioning is also advisable at least once every month.

Use natural hair products

Chemical treatments can cause hair to fall out and other significant damage to occur to your hair, so as much as possible use natural products such as Argan moroccan oil and other natural oils and organic shampoos.

The secret to growing your hair longer and healthier is to take care of it, so you will have less hair loss and breakage.

4 Signs that You Need to Trim Your Hair

You might need to trim your hair if you notice that you have split ends, your hair is damaged, your hair is out of shape, and you have not changed your hairstyle in a while.

Your hair is one of your most noticeable assets and taking care of it properly is very important. There are many products to use and ways that you can take care of your hair. Natural oils like pure Moroccan Argan oil can help nourish your hair and make it softer. Trimming your hair is also one way of taking care of your hair and can help make it become healthier. Even if you are purposely trying to make your hair grow longer, it is advisable to trim your hair regularly. But how can you tell if you need to trim your hair? Here are some signs:

long-hair

You have split ends

There is no effective solution to split ends, but there are ways to prevent split ends such as using conditioner regularly. If you already have split ends, then trimming your hair is a good idea. You should have your hair trimmed when you first notice the split ends because if you put off trimming your hair, the split ends will keep splitting and can turn into severely damaged split hair strands. Split ends can be spotted by looking closely at the tips of your hair. Unlike a normal hair strand which is intact from the root to the tip, split ends look like two separate strands at the tip. You can trim your hair at least an inch and half when you first see signs of split ends.

Your hair is damaged

If you regularly style your hair with heat-styling devices like flat irons and blow dryers or apply chemical products and coloring treatments often, you might notice your hair becoming dry and unmanageable. Your hair could also break off easily making the texture rough and stiff, two symptoms of damaged hair. You can deep condition your hair regularly to avoid hair damage, but if it’s already too late to undo the damage caused by unhealthy hair practices, get a trim.

Your hair is out of shape

Trim your hair when it becomes slightly unmanageable and no longer looks like the original hairstyle you want. Even if your hair is healthy, you can experience flyway strands or lack of volume. Remember that the longer your hair becomes, the more gravity tends to act on it to pull your hair down and out of shape. If your original hairstyle included choppy layers, side swept bangs and other significant details, this could be quite inconvenient. Regularly trimming your hair can help maintain its shape and style.

You have not changed your hairstyle in a while

Your hair can be your perfect accessory, and the right hairstyle can help bring out the best of your features. But, like fashion, hairstyle trends change regularly. If you have not changed your hairstyle in a long time, it might be a good idea to get a trim. You might actually like the change.

Hair care doesn’t really have to involve a lot of money and artificial products. A simple trim or the right natural products can make a lot of difference to your hair.

Style Secret: Hair Styling

Hair brings one's self-image into focus; it is vanity's proving ground. Hair is terribly personal, a tangle of mysterious prejudices. ~Shana Alexander

I am on the quest for creativity in styling but if there is one thing I am not creative enough, that is my hair. I wear my long hair almost always Jennifer Aniston’s style and occasionally, collect it in a pony if the weather is ridiculously hot. Otherwise, I don’t really have any idea how to style my hair.

I envy women who are skilled in styling their hair all by themselves. I believe it is not an easy task, expertise aside. I also admire women who are daring enough to try different hair styles, long or short, straight or curly. Much more lovely are women who loves dying their hair and trying on red hair, blond or brunette. And guess what extremely makes me gravely envious about these women is the fact that they always look good. It is sad because that is just not the case for everyone.

I believe that there is more than just bravery in styling your hair. The nature of the hair itself is a factor. Is the hair naturally straight or curly? Is the hair thick or thin? Your face structure is another factor. Sometimes, no matter how you’d love to wear bangs, it just doesn’t fit you. Do you have very curly hair? Forget about bangs. There are times that you just want to go girly and carefree so that you wish you could collect all hair in a pony tail. But then you have wide forehead with a very high hairline, you don’t really want to display that much forehead so you rather forget about it too. But hey, maybe you can actually go on pony but just leave some lock hanging down your face?

Every factor that contributes to a good hairstyle is essential for your prom party. Going to a prom is not just all about prom dresses and prom shoes; it is most importantly about prom hair. I remembered very well when I went to my first prom. I had this very pretty mini dress that mom bought for me. I found a pair of silver princess shoes that went perfectly with the dress. To complete the look, I went to a hair dresser who promised the world to make me the most elegant girl with the best hair in the party in exchange for a good fortune [at least it was a fortune for a young girl]. When the hair was done, I looked like a female version of a male transvestites only that a lot less pretty. My dad was not impressed. Right now, whenever I need to have my hair done for a dinner or a formal party, I make sure that I check Beauty on IVillage for suggested hair dos. I choose which I believe would work for me, print the photo and show it to the hair dresser. Most of the time, a photo works better in giving instructions.

Do tell me girls, what are your style secrets when it comes to hair styling?
